Basic Training Descriptions

These sessions bring in practicing planners with many years of experience to share their knowledge of planning skills and processes. The practical tools and ideas expressed in these sessions are intended to be those that are not learned in the classroom, but that are equally important to a career in planning.

 

11:05 a.m. - 12:05 p.m.

The 4 P's of Planning: Passion, People, Places & Politics (What Do I Need to Know to Be Successful in Planning?)

This session will address a variety of skills all planners should have before entering the profession. This includes conflict resolution, leadership, small-group decision-making, and handling the people that want to bite your head off when you walk into the room!

Implementation Strategies

How do I get ideas for planning projects? Once I have an idea, how do I implement it? Where does the money come from? This session will provide you with tips to keeping your project on task, and how to address problems quickly and efficiently.

Public Speaking Essentials

The first day of your new career, you may be thrown out to the wolves in a public meeting. How will you address questions off the cuff and still keep you cool? This session will show you how to keep your presentation sounding polished and professional when dealing with controversial issues.
