Option 1: Implementing Sustainable Development Practices: Why it's Important and what Planners Can Do
MSU and MAP partnered in the fall of 2007 to create and disseminate a survey to more than 900 professional planners to ascertain the level of understanding of sustainable development practices, and the extent to which such practices are implemented by planners. This session will discuss the results of that survey. Specific initative and strategies that can be implemented by planners at the local level to overcome challenges will be explored.

Option 2: Public Agencies Meet Sustainable Design
This session will explain the benefits of sustainable design and demonstrate how to incorporate these benefits into public policy; addressing successful implementation programs. An overview of resources that are available to assist agencies looking to add or improve sustainable initiatives will be provided.

Option 1: Ethics and Law
Ethical Aspects of Professional Planning
This session is designed for the practicing planner to sharpen knowledge and expertise in the foundations of ethics in planning. Planners will engage in hands-on exercises focused on ethical challenges in practice. This workshop meets the AICP Certification Maintenance (CM) program requirements for ethics.

Environmental Law
This session will explain the legislation behind renewable and alternative energy and discuss case law and sample ordinances relating to siting guidelines and land use. This session meets the AICP CM requirement for law.

Option 2: LEED for Planners
This three hour program will help you understand how to determine if a project is LEED certified in this hands-on activity. This program will cover what planners need to know about architectural standards for a LEED building, as well as explain the pilot program the Building Council has developed for neighborhood development, LEED-ND.
