Planning Basics Description

These sessions bring in practicing planners with many years of experience to share their knowledge of planning skills and processes. The practical tools and ideas expressed in these sessions are intended to be those that are not learned in the classroom, but that are equally important to a career in planning.

 

10:15 a.m. - 11:15 a.m.

GIS in Municipal Government - Washtenaw County


The Washtenaw County (Michigan) Department of Planning and Environment and Drain Commissioner's Office is utilizing GIS technologies to automate workflows and present ideas spatially.  This workshop will showcase some examples of practical GIS applications at Washtenaw County, including Geodatabase Design, Geoprocessing, Coordinate Geometry(COGO), GPS technologies, Data Conversion, and ESRI Model Builder.

 

Anthony Bedogne, GISP is a GIS Technician for the Washtenaw County Land Use and Environment Community of Interest.  Anthony has experience in geospatial planning technologies, compiling data, asset inventory with GPS, and presentation mapping.  He works with public officials to improve the efficiencyof the decision making process by visualizing  scenarios.

 

11:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.

Ethical Aspects of Professional Planning

 

This session is designed to sharpen knowledge and expertise in the foundations of ethics in planning.  Participants will engage in hands-on exercises focused on ethical challenges in practice.

 

Jim Schafer is the Community Development Director for the City of Madison Heights. He has been a planner for 23 years and has provided planning services in both the public and private sectors throughout the state at the township, village, city and county level. Jim has Bachelor degrees in Land Use Analysis and Political Science and a Masters Degree in Public Administration from Eastern Michigan University. Jim is also an adjunct instructor in the Master of Public Administration program at Eastern Michigan University, where he initiated, developed and teaches a graduate course on "The Politics of Local Planning" for the past 15 years.

 

1:30 p.m. - 3:15 p.m.

Site Plan Review

 

This hands-on program provides practical tools and techniques on how to read a site plan.   Design principles, such as pedestrian and traffic considerations, lighting, utilities, ADA compliance, inspections, and landscaping will be covered  Defining the elements of a good site plan is the key to this course!

 
John Enos, AICP received his Bachelors and Masters Degree in Urban and Regional Planning from Eastern Michigan University. He was named Principal and a shareholder of the firm in 2002. He has fifteen years experience working as a planning consultant and also as a Planning Director for local (Pittsfield Township) and county (Livingston County) government. He currently represents and provides planning, zoning and growth management services to several local communities in Washtenaw and Livingston County. John has been certified by the State of Michigan as a Level I Tax Assessor, Soil Erosion Control Officer and Professional Emergency Manager. In addition to his planning duties, he has served as a member of the Board of Directors of the Michigan Society of Planning and also serves as an instructor at Eastern Michigan University and the Huron River Watershed Council.
