Filling the Gaps second edition and Take-home Training

The Michigan Association of Planning, in partnership with the Michigan Department of Natural Resources and Environment's Coastal Management Program produced a take-home training to provide local officials, citizen planners, community planners, and environmental professionals with the tools, resources, and implementation strategies to ensure that the right plans, regulations, and effective coordination mechanisms are in place to protect Michigan's natural and environmental treasures.  The publication is a full color resource with appendices on CD.  The take-home training is 2.5 hours long is available on DVD.

Mark Wyckoff, FAICP, Professor and Director, Planning & Zoning Center at MSU, Senior AssociateDirector, Land Policy Institute, developed the training and updated the content.

Zoning Board of Appeals Toolkit

This new publication addresses what is considered to be a gap in introductory materials for Zoning Board of Appeals (ZBA) members in their earliest months of service.  This publication benefits new ZBA members by providing basic resource information in a tabbed, indexed, and easy to use format that can be referenced before and during meetings.  The Zoning Board of Appeals’ responsibilities are a delicately legislated balance of administrative review and legal authority.  This toolkit equips new ZBA members with the requisite knowledge and skills to execute the duties of their appointment.  This publication diminishes the reliance on “on the job training” by providing information and resources up front.

The publication includes descriptions of the roles and responsibilities of the ZBA; provides instruction for preparing for and conducting meetings; details the process of reviewing petitions; and detailed information on the unique responsibilities of the ZBA and the appropriate standards to apply.  Each publication contains an extensive resource section, variance worksheets, as well as a glossary of terms.
