Training Wheels course offered in Grand Rapids

Building bicycle-friendly communities

In an era of expanding multimodal thinking, which includes more emphasis on addressing all of our customers’ transportation needs, communities are challenged to design roadways that demand a broader understanding of the infrastructure needs of bicyclists.

That's why MDOT and partners are encouraged to attend this updated one-day Training Wheels (V2.0) course to be offered on August 14, 15, and 16 in Grand Rapids. This community was selected to showcase National Association of City Transportation Officials (NACTO) bicycle facilities, such as separated bike lanes, buffered bike lanes, and other bikeway design challenges. These courses are open to MDOT staff, community officials, and other stakeholders. Engineers are eligible for 7.0 continuing education credits, and certified planners may self-report up to 7.0 AICP certification maintenance hours.

The course features classroom instruction on the NACTO guides, supplemented with information from the AASHTO Guide for the Development of Bicycle Facilities, followed by an on-road segment. The on-road segment will consist of a casual bike ride through downtown in order to analyze various types of newer bicycle facilities, including separated or buffered bike lanes, and other roadway/bikeway design challenges.

The classes held last month in Detroit were amazing – we received positive feedback from every single one of the 75-plus attendees! Register now to participate in this one-day educational course on the planning and design of on-road bicycle facilities.  More information here.   Register here for Grand Rapids training. If you have questions send an e-mail to [email protected].
