Planning Law Seminar
Tuesday, June 02, 2020, 2:00 PM - 3:30 PM EDT
Category: MAP Events

Michigan’s Planning Enabling Act (MPEA) and Michigan Zoning Enabling Act (MZEA) are the statutes which authorize planning and zoning in Michigan, and are the framework upon which we build local master plans, zoning ordinances and capital improvement plans.  These enabling laws provide structure and rules for planners’ work.  In particular, they shape a community’s built and natural environments, transportation systems and infrastructure.

But what do these statues really say?  And have you actually READ the acts? As planners, we are responsible for providing advice and counsel to our elected and appointed leaders, and most everything we do is provided for in the MPEA and the MZEA.

MAP is debuting a series of seminars that allow planners to examine our foundational laws in depth and discuss their real-world impacts.  Like a book group, participants should read the law prior to the discussion.   To start, we will examine these two sets of laws.

MPEA seminar in two parts on Tuesdays, May 12 and May 19 from 2 PM to 3:30 PM

MZEA seminar in two parts on Tuesdays, May 26 and June 2 from 2 PM to 3:30 PM
