Introduction

Michigan has more than 11,000 inland lakes providing drinking water sources and recreational opportunities to residents and visitors of the state.  These lakes provide a local identity to many Michigan communities, and play a key role in their local economies.  A person in Michigan is never more than 6 miles from an inland water source.

The resources below describe how the master planning process can help communities in efforts to protect water resources including inland lakes, as well as tools to implement regulations and programs envisioned by a master planning process.
