Introduction

Michigan has over 36,000 miles of rivers and streams throughout the state.  Many of these rivers and streams are key shared resource for Michigan communities, and play a key role in their local economies.  A person in Michigan is never more than 6 miles from an inland water source.

The following pages describe how the master planning process can help communities in efforts to protect water resources including inland lakes, as well as tools to implement regulations and programs envisioned by a master planning process.
