Photo and Artwork Contest

The MAP is having a photo and artwork contest!

As we launch a refreshed Michigan Planner magazine, website and other printed material, we seek to showcase high quality images to help tell our stories.  A picture is worth a thousand words and we'd love to feature yours.   Images could make the cover of the magazine, or the inside, or used in other MAP educational and promotional material.

We are looking for images that highlight the wide world of Planning in Michigan.  Submit images showcasing the wide range of planning-related experiences in Michigan.  This can include downtowns, festivals, streets, buildings of various architectural styles, utilities, agriculture, coasts and other natural resources, historic preservation, people and planning work for a chance to win great prizes.

1st Place --- A $250 credit to a MAP event

2nd Place --- A $150 credit to a MAP event

3rd Place ---  A $100 credit to a MAP event

All winning images will be featured in the Michigan Planner, Michigan Planner E-Dition, and/or other MAP publications.

Up to five (5) photos can be submitted electronically, by emailing your photos to [email protected]  with the subject line "MAP Photo and Art Contest Submission."

Please rename each submission with your last name followed by a number sequence (i.e. Smith_1, Smith_2, etc.).

In the body of your email, please include your first and last name, email address, phone number and captions including:

  • file name,
  • the subject of the image,
  • the location the image was taken,
  • name of the event (if applicable),
  • the name of the photographer(s).

Be sure to review the full Rules and Legal Conditions below before entering.

  • Submissions must be 4 megapixels or greater.
  • Submissions must have captions that include:
    • the subject of the image,
    • the location the image was taken (for  photos) or the location that inspired the artwork
    • name of the event (if applicable),
    • and the name of the photographer(s) or artist(s).
  • Participants must be 18 years or older.
  • Entries must be submitted within the given time period.
  • Up to five (5) entries may be submitted per person.
  • You must send us your email address and phone number.

To ensure eligibility for the contest, all entries must have a resolution of at least 4 megapixels to be made available upon request. Images that do not meet this standard can still be judged, but may not be honored as a finalist in the competition (at the judging panel's discretion) if the photographer is unable or unavailable to provide the proper resolution when asked.

Entries may originate in any format — including, but not limited to digital files, digital prints, color transparencies, color prints, or black and white prints —but they must be submitted electronically. Previously published material for which non-exclusive rights were granted may be entered as long as you still maintain the right to grant us a license (see "Your Rights" below). You must be able to disclose when and where the photo appeared previously to MAP upon request.

If you choose to include other people in your submission, you are responsible for obtaining the necessary releases from the individuals depicted and must be able to provide copies of those releases to MAP upon request. Entrants must not submit images that involve an infringement on the rights of any other photographer or person.

Submissions may be watermarked if desired, but the watermark should be inconspicuous enough to not interfere with the judging of the photo. A watermarked photo might not be honored by the competition (at the judging panel's discretion) if the photographer is unable or unavailable to provide a pristine, watermark-free version of the image when asked.

The photo contest is open to ALL photographers/artists at least 18 years of age with the exception of MAP employees, board members and the immediate families of such.

Images will be judged on originality, technical excellence, composition, overall impact and artistic merit. The judges are a panel of MAP staff and volunteers familiar with photography. MAP shall determine winner eligibility in its sole and absolute discretion. All decisions made by the judges are final.

Deadline for submitting entries is 11:59 pm Eastern Standard Time on Thursday, January 2, 2020.

Entrants may be asked to supplement their submission (such as a paragraph about their photo, the highest resolution version of their photo, or a watermark-free version of their photo) anytime on or after January 2, 2020.

MAP reserves the right to adjust any deadline(s) as the result of causes beyond its immediate control.
